Portrait of a Girl

Almost identical to other portraits of women completed by Titian, the Portrait of a Girl is a unique painting showing a young woman rumoured to be the daughter of the artist.

It is recognised as Portrait of a Girl or Portrait of Lavinia Vecellio because the identity of the woman on the painting is unknown yet Lavinia was the closest figure she resembled due to her light hair. Titian utilises the renaissance painting style to complete the portrait that depicts a young woman slightly clutching her dress. The portrait was completed in circa 1545 by the artist who is known as Tiziano Vecellio often shortened as Titian.

To complete Portrait of a Girl, it is evident Titian utilised panel painting which involves putting oil on wood to come up with a portrait. This technique was popular before painters adopted the oil on canvas technique. In addition, the combination of colours is on point. He did a good job in Portrait of a Girl shown by the use of colours to depict light golden glare and a delightful gap of pale pink. This makes the picture look awesome and appropriate for the dark background.

An interpretation of the portrait links it to the image of Clelia Farnese (1556-1613), a feminine figure recognised by her contemporaries. She was the spouse of the Marco III Pio of Savoy, the Lord of Sassuolo and Formigine. Despite the lack of enough information to authenticate the figure, few scientists believe it was commissioned by a member of Pope Paul III’s family. On the other hand, some contest whether Portrait of a Girl was an original art piece completed by Titian. Others are of the opinion that the painting was an imitation done by another talented artist influenced by Titian.

Nevertheless, the techniques utilised in this work indicate that it was compelted by an artist affiliated to Titian. He or she may have been influenced by Titian and his unique style of creation. Currently, the painting is held at the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples which is a culture rich town located in Italy.

To clear the air on who inspired the painting, Titian's daughter may have played a pivotal role in his works. This is not the first time that he painted her. All in all, Titian who had an ardent love for his daughter may have been inspired to make creations for her. His works continue to stand out among the most notable works of the Italian Renaissance.
