Portrait of Titus

Rembrandt van Rijn's son, Titus, features in countless portraits across a variety of mediums, with this painting completed in 1668 and now owned by the Louvre in Paris, France

There are around seven oil on canvas paintings by Rembrandt of his son Titus, with this believed to be the last. Coming just a year before the artist's death, this is a probably true. Most sad of all, it was also to be the time of his son's demise too.

Titus was the fourth and only surviving child of Rembrandt's marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh but he would still only last until age 26, such was the short life expectancy during this time in European history. He was also a significant offspring in that he actually was an accomplished painter himself and would sometimes help out in his father's studio, contributing to some ongoing paintings.

The wife and and mother-in-law would also pass away around the same time as his father, making this a horrific time in the family's history, as it was for many Dutch familities during this period of widespread illness.

This painting remains at the Louvre, alongside several other works by Rembrandt. There are also other famous artists such as Raphael, Titian, Poussin, Van Dyck and Da Vinci.
