View from the Dunes with Beach and Piers, Domburg was a favourite spot for the artist in the Netherlands, where he spent many a sunny summer day.

This particular work is a study piece from 1909 and is aggressively abstract. There are clear elements to this painting that point to the future direction of artist Mondrian. With simple brushstrokes, their direction and colour is what creates the landscape scene.

Mondrian was quoted around this time as stating, "...in gray, dark weather or in very strong sunlight, when the density of the atmosphere obscures the details and accentuates the large outlines of objects..." This reminds us of several artists, of all manner of mediums. Ansel Adams' Moonrise Hernandez New Mexico and Georgia O'Keeffe's Black Mesa Landscape New Mexico are apt examples of what he meant. This painting captures dunes on the left, sea coming in from the right plus the sky above. Dunes and seascapes more generally were common in Mondrian's work, see also Dune landscape.
