Renoir did this painting while he was in association with other like-minded impressionist painters. Being under the tutelage of renowned art teacher Charles Gleyre who love landscape painting, Renoir was bound to paint some landscape paintings in his career.

The On the Seine near Argenteuil is a fantastic combination of landscape painting and impressionist painting. The painting was part of the paintings Renoir did when they were trying to advance impressionist painting together with other modern painters of the time.

On the Seine near Argenteuil features all the characteristics original impressionist painting as had been started at the beginning. The painting has had many acclaims as it is one of the paintings that have been referred to when the talk about the birth of impressionist painting arises.

On the Seine near Argenteuil is a great example of an impressionist painting as it had been originally advanced. This was the kind of paintings that had been rejected by juries of popular exhibitions like the salon.

Renoir employed the characteristic heavy brushstroke on this painting. He also paid a lot of attention to the balance between light and contrast in the painting. The balanced blend of the colors of the setting is amazing.

Renoir just like the other impressionist painters of the time had a habit of trying to make the colors on the painting blend with each other rather than just leaving them crashing as had been advanced by academic techniques (William-Adolphe Bouguereau was amongst the finest academic artists with famous paintings such as The Birth of Venus, Nymphs and Satyr and Evening Mood). This aspect mad their painting pieces very unique and impressive. The painting has a theme of serenity.

It features the image of a bungalow seen at a distance as if a person was peeking through some bushes. There is also an image of what seems to be like a body of water surrounding the bungalow. The setting is perfect and creates a fine aura of serenity and contemplation.

Renoir worked with a number of artists over his painting career. The painting career of Renoir presents an interesting case study as he painted both classical and impressionist painting. Majorly, he worked with impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille.

He also drew some inspiration from other modern painters of the time such as Camille Pissarro and Edouard Manet. On the Seine near Argenteuil is a landscape painting. A lot of the painting approach and choice of setting in Renoir's painting works was informed by the influences of Charles Gleyre, his art school instructor.

The identity of the young girls remains unknown. Young girls playing the piano was an interesting subject for Renoir as he painted it over and over again.
