Night Scene

The Night scene is oil on canvas painting by Peter Paul Rubens created in the years 1616-1617. The painting has a Baroque theme. The pane is inspired by the Caravaggio style, whose work Rubens had seen in Italy.

The Caravaggio style is characterised by its unpolished naturalism and exhilarating light effects. In the painting, an aged lady stare ahead, protecting her eyes from the candlelight, while the lad behind her holds his candle ready to be lit. This painting remained in Ruben’s ownership until his demise for it was not meant for sale. It is possible he used it in his studio as a learning tool for his students. Night scene today resides at Mauritshuis, The Hague, Netherlands.

Antonie Watteau enjoyed painting landscapes and atmospheres and jovial moments in human life in a Baroque style inspired by Peter Paul Rubens.
