Klee initially drew cathedrals in pen and ink on paper, adding oil and water colors later

A vibrant mixture of color, with a soft and natural blend of blues, purples and a faint hint of oranges, that pull the viewer to the center of an array of subtle shades.

Further, it allows the architecture of the cathedrals to come into focus. Once the viewer’s attention is captured, the eye begins to see an almost spidery web tapestry of drawings, of cathedral's towers and windows. Each section is captured in a square, as the collage of architecture becomes clearer.

Cathedrals has been painted in a variety of soft colors, giving almost an almost feminine aspect to this particular piece of art work. Where the firm structure of lineal drawings lends a masculine context to the structure of Cathedrals.

Paul Klee is a master of modern art, and a major influence on many 20th century surrealist painters, as well as the emerging abstract and expressionist field. He was renowned for his surrealism techniques, blending the real world with the abstract with his bold use of color and light. It is said that the true nature of his paintings comes to life through the unconscious thought, whilst viewing.

Cathedrals is a modern art painting by Paul Klee (1879-1940), which he painted c1914. A work of art which is a fusion of abstract and realism, and an eclectic mix of styles. Boasts distinct influences from cubism, futurism and surrealism. Klee’s paintings and drawings are said to be influenced by many art forms, including music, poetry, primitive art, as well as dreams and unconscious symbolism.
