The Favourite Poet

The Favourite Poet was done by Lawrance Alma Tadema, a painter who was highly interested in the Roman Way of Life. The painting is about a woman who's lying on cushions on a bench.

From the picture, we can clearly see that the young Roman woman outstretches her body a sign of distress and is uncomfortable. The painting also contains another character who is feminine. This other character is also a woman with this a scroll believed to be poetic and is seen reading it to the first woman. The painting has seen various artists come up with a similar copy of the painting. Some artists have even recreated what Lawrence did decades ago. There are multiple samples from different artists who have created this piece of work and have it in their collection. One such artist Leopold Lowenstam and individual that was mostly inspired by Lawrence concerning art. This artist goes on to sign up to the Art Academy after studying the various paintings that Lawrence did.

From the painting, you can clearly see the artists' primary objective was to prove to others and the world at large that the Romans were just as human like others. He passes this message clearly by showing in the painting that they also enjoyed poetry the same way humans did enjoy poetry. From the painting, we also see the artist being keen on giving a detailed description of the environment. In as much as the artist focuses on the two characters, he also brings us a great environment of where the two are. This proves that the artist is quite good at passing a message to his audience.

When you focus on the lady that's laying on the cushions. We can conclude that she is somehow disturbed or unrest. Hence the need for a poet. We could also conclude that the poet is trying to calm down the lady through the use of poetry. This implements the artist suggestion to the audience that the Romans were also human and would suffer from emotional distress. The use of poetry in the piece art clearly shows how the Romans dealt with their stressful situations. The painting is currently located at Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool (U.K).
