Degas Little Girl Carrying Flowers In Her Apron: Introduction

A girl lifts the sides of her pale dress to hold a small gathering of flowers. One foot reaches forward; red ribbons mark her hair and clothes. Edgar Degas painted this image around 1860–62, early in his career. Its French title, Fillette portant des fleurs dans son tablier, names the action. Michel Schulman's catalogue lists the work as MS855, an oil on canvas in a private collection. [1][2] [5]

The pose can look like a dance step, but the picture is not documented as a portrait of an Opéra performer. Sotheby's identifies it as Degas's treatment of a much earlier portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence, Miss Murray. The painting therefore opens a different way into Degas: looking at how a young artist learned from a predecessor while changing what the familiar pose could do. [2][3]

A step into the light

The girl stands at the centre of the canvas, holding out the fabric with both hands. The lifted hem forms a shallow cradle for flowers. Her white dress and skin are much lighter than the dark setting, so the figure comes forward before the details of the ground and trees become clear. [1][2]

A red band crosses the dress below the chest. Smaller red accents reappear on the shoulders and in the hair. These separated patches help the eye travel up the figure. The extended arms widen her outline, while the one foot set in front of the other makes the pose seem poised between standing still and taking another step. [1][4]

The background leaves the location indistinct. It suggests an outdoor setting through the dark tree form and patches of sky, but it does not locate a named garden or a real event. The title identifies what she carries, not where she gathered it or why. A viewer can read a curtsy, a game or a dance in the pose without turning any of those possibilities into a recorded scene. [1][2]

Looking at Lawrence

Sotheby's catalogue note connects Degas's picture to Thomas Lawrence's portrait of Louisa Georgina Murray, known as Miss Murray. English Heritage lists Lawrence's painting among the works at Kenwood House. The connection matters because it makes this canvas part of Degas's early practice of studying earlier artists. It does not establish that the child in Degas's version posed for him. [2][3]

Lawrence's subject and Degas's painting are separated by decades. Degas could take an earlier composition as a starting point while making a new painted object. Look at how the pale dress seems to emerge from a darker field, and how the flowers collect along the lifted fabric. Those effects are in Degas's own canvas even as the older portrait supplies a point of comparison. [1][2]

The later fame of Degas's dancers can make this girl look like an early ballerina. Sotheby's itself suggests that the posture anticipates a later interest in such figures. That is a reading of Degas's career, rather than evidence that the girl is performing in a ballet. Her identity and the purpose of the scene should remain open in a description of the work. [2]

Material, scale and mark

The work is an oil on canvas. Sotheby's measured it at 73.3 × 55.7 cm; Schulman's catalogue rounds this to 73 × 56 cm. It is large enough for the standing child and surrounding dark space to register together, while the flowers, ribbon and forward foot reward a closer view. [1][2]

Both sources describe the mark at the lower right as an estate-sale stamp. It should not be described as Degas personally signing the painting at the time he made it. The stamp is a later record of how works from the artist's studio were handled after his death. A small mark in a reproduction can be easy to mistake for an ordinary signature, so the provenance record is the better guide. [1][2]

Photographs of the work may differ in colour and contrast. The reproduction cited here shows a near-white dress against a very dark surrounding field. It helps identify the exact composition, but it cannot by itself settle the painting's original colour balance or surface condition. [1][4]

From Degas's studio onward

The painting remained in Degas's studio and appeared in the first posthumous studio sale in 1918, lot 94. Sotheby's then lists Max Dearly and the Gutzwiller collection, followed by a 1996 auction and Swiss private ownership. Schulman's later catalogue includes additional auction appearances in 2019, 2020 and 2023. Those records show that the painting has circulated; they do not establish its exact current owner. [1][2]

The two sources disagree on the precise date of the 1996 sale, so there is no advantage in asserting its day and month here. The work was included in a 1975 Degas exhibition at Galerie Schmit in Paris. An earlier exhibition does not mean it can be visited now: the catalogue currently records it as in a private collection. [1][2]

Looking again

Begin with the small cluster of flowers, then trace the curved apron hem out to each hand. From there follow the red ribbons up through the dress to the girl's hair, and return to the forward foot. The sequence reveals how a simple lifted skirt organises a whole picture. [1][4]

This is a specific early Degas oil, MS855, with an earlier portrait behind its design and a documented path through the studio estate sale. The pose can invite a dance comparison, but the Lawrence link and the work's early date deserve to be seen first. [1][2][3]
