Degas Before The Curtain Call: Introduction

A woman in a green dress looks down toward her hands. Another figure in dark clothing sits or leans beside her. Edgar Degas places them behind a strong diagonal edge and views them from high above. The pastel is catalogued as Avant le lever du rideau, or Before the Curtains Rise, Schulman MS1645 / Lemoisne IV-1116. It dates to 1892 in the specialist record, which identifies it as pastel on paper in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, accession 1956.477. ^{[1] [3] [4]}

“Before the Curtain Call” is an imprecise English title for this work. A curtain call follows a performance, whereas avant le lever du rideau places us before the curtain rises. A National Gallery of Art exhibition checklist calls the work Before Curtain-Rise and dates it c.1892. That title gives a sense of anticipation without claiming a specific moment in a known production. ^[1][2]

A steep view of a quiet interval

The viewpoint is immediately unusual. We look down at the top of the woman's head and across her shoulders to hands resting low in her lap. The second figure bows forward. Their faces do not invite portrait-like recognition: one is tipped down, the other partly concealed. This high angle lets Degas make an arrangement from bodies, costume and surrounding surface, while leaving the exchange between the figures unresolved. ^[1]

The woman at left is marked by cool blue light on her face and chest. Her green sleeves and skirt are laid in with brighter strokes that cut against the brown-grey setting. A dark-haired companion at right has a more enclosed silhouette. The companion's dark upper garment nearly merges with the shadowed background, while green and blue marks across the lower half visually connect the two figures. The painting does not tell us their names, occupations or relationship. ^[1]

One small light appears near the upper-left corner, and a pale diagonal boundary runs behind the pair. Another broad light passage crosses the lower edge. These sloping divisions keep the composition from becoming a simple portrait of two seated people. They give the eye a route through the image: from the little light, down the slanted edge, across the green costume and into the dense marks near the bottom. ^[1]

The diagonal also creates uncertainty about exactly where the figures are sitting. It may suggest a boundary or passage in a theatre interior, but the specialist catalogue does not name an architectural feature. The secure observation is the contrast between the two figures and the slanting lighter surfaces around them. ^[1]

What pastel contributes

Degas's pastel strokes stay visible throughout the picture. On the woman's skirt they run downward in narrow bands; across the lower portion they cross and overlap in greys, oranges and blue-greens. Some contours are precise enough to locate an arm or hand, then soften into the surrounding colour. This mixture makes the figures feel both close and hard to pin down. ^[1]

The central green is hardly one uniform hue. Yellow-green highlights touch the sleeves and lower costume, while blue-green and grey carry the shaded areas. The companion's darker clothing is built from browns, olive greens and blackish marks. A single colour can therefore belong to clothing, shadow and setting at once. The figures emerge through changes in pressure, direction and light, rather than through firm outlines on every side. ^[1]

The close crop reinforces the high viewpoint. The woman's full skirt fills much of the narrow paper, leaving little room for a conventional view of a stage or audience. We are drawn to the moments before movement: lowered heads, gathered hands and a costume spreading over the space between them. This is a reading of the image, not a documented account of what the figures are about to do. ^[1]

A documented object, several titles

The specialist catalogue records the pastel as 51 × 34 cm, signed at the upper right, with Lemoisne number IV-1116. The NGA checklist for Degas at the Opéra supplies 50.8 × 34.3 cm, effectively the same dimensions at a finer precision, and gives the Wadsworth credit line as the Ella Gallup Sumner and Mary Catlin Sumner Collection Fund. These independent records link the image, subject and accession to a single Wadsworth work. ^[1][2]

The catalogue traces the pastel from Degas's studio through Paul Cassirer, Durand-Ruel and later owners before its 1956 acquisition by the Wadsworth. It also records appearances in New York exhibitions in 1960 and 1978 and in Degas: A New Vision in Melbourne and Houston in 2016–17. This history supports identification of the object; it does not specify who the pictured figures were. ^[1]

The inherited English phrase “Before the Curtain Call” suggests an event after the performance. The French Avant le lever du rideau and NGA's Before Curtain-Rise place the scene before the curtain rises. That distinction matters when reading the figures' poised interval: the title points toward something about to begin, without specifying their next action. ^[1][2]

Looking again

Compare the two heads and the two kinds of costume. The left figure's lowered gaze and luminous green skirt draw us in, while the companion forms a darker counterweight. Then follow the diagonals behind and beneath them. Degas makes a small, uncertain pause feel expansive by letting the pastel marks carry movement across the whole sheet. ^[1]
