Paintings

Lord Frederic Leighton's paintings took influence from the major centres of European art from the past few centuries. The artist spent considerable time in continental Europe, travelling and learning as he aimed to maximise his natural artistic talent.

Leighton spent several years in his teens and twenties in Italy, where he would receive training in addition to being able to study some of the most famous paintings from the Renaissance close-up. He was known for being particularly knowledgeable about this important period in European art and it was Cimabue and Giotto who left the greatest impression on him. He would also later spend time in Germany and France too, as he started to build up connections with other significant artists, such as Ingres, Delacroix, Corot and Millet. Artist Leighton is most famous for his skilled use of portraiture but he was also involved in other genres from time to time, such as landscape scenes. He also achieved several highly regarded artistic awards later on in his career.
